Explanatory Note and Acknowledgments : Spanish Drama of the Golden Age
This catalogue is intended to serve mainly as an accompanying guide for the user of the comedia collection of the University of Pennsylvania Libraries, in its microfilm form available from Research Publications, Inc. (now Primary Source Microfilm, an imprint of the Gale Group). Sufficient bibliographical information has been included, however, to provide the individual user, when the microfilm set is not available, with an accurate description of the contents of the collection.
The catalogue describes the holdings of the collection in editions up to the year 1846. The two large seventeenth-century collections, the Comedias nuevas escogidas and the Comedias varias, a collection of sueltas gathered by the Viennese Counts of Harrach, appear first. Individual authorsí partes and singly bound plays follow alphabetically arranged. Sueltas of a known author have been included in this section only if the author is represented by other works. Modern binderís volumes and single bound sueltas are next. The shelf order in which they are arranged at the University Libraries is maintained. A few works relating to the comedia, and modern collections of the comedia are last. The Sancha edition of Lope de Vegaís complete works has been included in toto rather than including only those volumes which contain dramatic pieces. Some original editions of a few of Lopeís non-dramatic works are also present because of their biographical interest or relationship with his dramatic production.
The works contained in each volume appear under the title and author listed in the table of contents. Any variants present on the title page of each individual play or item, as well as any additions not listed in the table of contents, have been inserted in brackets. In the Comedias varias bracketed information indicates an addition from the running head. The words comedia, tragicomedia, etc., when they form part of a title, have been normally omitted from our classification. If the order in which items are listed on the table of contents does not reflect the actual binding order of the items contained in a volume, it has been changed to agree with the order of appearance. If the table of contents is wanting, titles have been extracted from individual title pages or, in their defect, from the running head. In this case, only the title proper is included omitting any sub-headings.
Exact orthography is transcribed. Lines in capitals are reproduced in lower case except for proper names. All other capitals have been transcribed as they appear in the original.
Comedias have been assigned a number for purposes of classification. Loas and entremeses that accompany a comedia are not listed separately either in the bibliographical section or in the title index. Non-dramatic pieces have been assigned an alphabetical subindex. If, however, all letters of the alphabet have been used under one number, a new number is introduced in the sequence even if it does not correspond to a dramatic piece. (It has been necessary in a small number of cases to ascribe subindexes to dramatic pieces due to errors in numbering.)
Except for the Comedias varias, when a binderís volume is clearly and discernibly composed of sueltas, it has been noted in brackets following the binderís title. No effort has been made to determine if a volume is composed of sueltas except when its outer physical appearance and the colophon clearly indicate a collection of single plays. Sueltas, except for the Comedias varias, have been classified as follows if several authors are included in the same volume:

The title index comprises only those items which are described in the contents listing of each card. Main title entries are not included, as these may be located in the main catalogue under the authorís name (e.g., Vega Carpio, Lope de. La dorotea, El peregrino en su patria, etc.). Titles of dramatic pieces are entered under the predominant orthography. Modern spelling is given only when it seems to appear at least the same number of times as other forms.
Non-dramatic pieces are not included in the title index but important authors have an entry in this section, incorporating those items of biographical or bibliographical interest which appear in the contents listing of each card. Loas and entremeses adjunct to a comedia do not have a separate entry. In all other cases they appear under the title except when the word loa or extremés forms part of the title proper in which instance they will be listed under Loa or Entremés.
Common bibliographical sources have been freely consulted to verify many details.
