These documents provide fresh insights into important events in American medicine and their influence on medical practices, during a time that witnessed significant new advances in medicine and surgery.
The collection details such issues as the introduction of anesthetics to surgery, improvements in diagnosis and therapeutics, the development of the public field, allopathic, homeopathic and naturopathic medicine and debates between faddish practitioners and rising medical professionals.
The first phase of the project consists of those titles that began publication prior to 1850. A second phase covers the years 1850-1900.
